A Boy's Absence
by Arnold W. Smith.
This cycle of twenty sonnets were first published in a anonymous booklet in 1919 by the schoolmaster Arnold W. Smith. They reflect the pain of being away, possibly during the school holidays, from a boy for whom Smith had a romantic attachment.
This edition is a faithful reprint of the first and only edition which is now extremely scarce and commands very high prices. Callum James Books is pleased to be able to offer this title in a complete edition of 50 numbered copies. The first 20 copies are casebound in boards covered with marbled paper, the remaining 30 copies are sewn into plain brown card covers. Both states are illustrated by reproductions of five pen and ink drawings made especially for this publication. The original edition was a small booklet and this has been echoed in the somewhat smaller than normal size of our edition to maintain some of the intimacy one feels on reading the original.
