Rolfe After Oscott: Two Letters
Frederick Rolfe demonstrated a long and enduring sense of vocation to the priesthood which was never fulfilled despite a lifetime of trying. In 1888, he had got as far as theological training at Oscott theological seminary but after some months, demonstrating his eccentric ways, he was abruptly told not to return after the summer vacation.
This booklet contains two previously unpublished and recently discovered letters by Rolfe to the Rev'd James Parker, Procurator of Oscott, dating from the time shortly after he was asked to leave the college. The letters deal, unsurprisingly, with his attempts to avoid/put off his creditors but they also fill in a few biographical details in Rolfe's life at this time which have not been clear before. The booklet contains both letters in facsimile and in transcript as well as a short introductory essay and explanation of the finer points of biography that come out of the letters.
