Rolfe the Plaintiff
Court Papers

In 1903-4 Frederick Rolfe took on literary work for Colonel Owen Thomas involving the revision and preparation of the Colonel's book, Agricultural and Pastoral Prospects in South Africa - effectively he was engaged to 'ghost' the book from the notes and material Thomas had gathered. There were other small assignments too. Unfortunately, as was often the case with Rolfe, the relationship deteriorated quickly and soon Rolfe was issuing a writ and the two men ended up in court. All three of Rolfe's biographers deal, of course, with this sorry episode in varying degrees of detail but this is the first time that the actual court documents (Rolfe's 'Statement of Claim' and Thomas' 'Defence') have been transcribed and published from their home in the National Archives in London.
