Raven One: The Quest for Cockerton
by Robert Scoble

I am proud to announce the first in a series of occasional monographs on the life and work of Frederick Rolfe,’ Baron Corvo’. The Raven Series has been planned as a set of scholarly essays which will add substantially to our knowledge of the life and work of Frederick Rolfe. Each essay will be published in a strictly limited edition, and there is little doubt that complete sets will be sought after by collectors in the years to come.

Since the original publication of The Venice Letters by Frederick Rolfe some forty years ago, the identity of the man referred to only as Cockerton or Cocker, who travelled to Venice with Charles Masson Fox for their fateful meeting with Rolfe, has remained a mystery which has stumped all of Rolfe’s biographers. The Quest for Cockerton tells the story of a brilliant piece of detective work by the Corvine scholar Robert Scoble, who has followed leads all over the world to track down this elusive character.

The Quest for Cockerton is available in two states. Of a full edition of 70 the first twelve are case bound in dark blue paper-covered boards with gilt titles, signed by the author, and include a full set of illustrations by Cockerton for his only published book. Numbers 13-70 form the ordinary state of the edition and are sewn into blue card covers with a paper label and acetate covers and contain fewer illustrations.
