Notes on Oscar Wilde
for an unfinished bibliography of the Nineties
by A. J. A. Symons.
Symons is perhaps best remembered today for his Quest for Corvo but, although his life was tragically short it was filled with passionate interests including the literature of the 1890s. At the time of his death there were two great projects unfinished. One was his massive bibliography of the Nineties with notes on the authors and the other was a biography (probably one of the earliest attempts at an unbiased biography) of Oscar Wilde. This booklet is a reproduction of the biographical notes which would have accompanied Wilde's entry in his bibliography.
Although there have clearly been many, perhaps too many, biographies of Wilde since this was put together in the mid 1920s it is interesting as one of the first attempts to summarise Wilde's life and work. It has been produced from Symons's original typescript and handwritten notes and has an introduction by Callum James.
